Although I do specialize in interactive work, I have an extensive background in graphic design and print in general.

IBM eServer Promotion

One of the unique feateres of IBM Power servers was partitioning, the ability to run up to 10 different things (OS, apps etc) on one CPU. This direct mail box was sent to existing eServer customers in north america and contained about 20 oranges and a juicer. A sales rep followed up with a box of oranges juice glasses.

This mailing won an IBM internal prize for best practises in direct marketing and was showcased world wide.

Promotional mailing for Quidnunc

Occasionally between interactive design projects at Quidnunc, I had the chance to design some print pieces. This was a sales flyer for Quidnunc, which didn't survived the dotcom bubble burst happening shortly after we did the flyer. The design elements were thin white strips on the background, which render a bit funny on the web.

Stationary (letter head, business cards etc.) for the Institut für Alltagskultur

Karin Falkenberg asked me to create a corporate identity for her "Institut für Alltagskultur." We found a set of 14 old pictures in her archive and used them as supporting visuals: writing biographies, living and talking history, stories for others to remember.

Tourist flyer "Churches in Würzburg"

10.5x21 cm, open 42x42cm, PDF

Würzburg is a pretty old town and is also famous for it's 42 churches. The catholic and protestant church of Würzburg wanted to focus a little bit more on tourists visting the city. In colaboration with the city's tourist department I designed this flyer as a guided city tour map, highlighting some of the most beautyfull and historical important churches in Würzburg.

Poster for the "Witch Progroms in Franconia" exhibition

80x60 cm

One of my last pieces I did together with Ernst Weckert for the City Council of Würzburg. This exhibition was moving from town to town, so we did 3 variations of the posters and flyers, but not too similar.

Book "Work in Progress" for the Department for City Development

21x30 cm

In the past years I did several projects with the Department for City Development, thsi is one of them. I did the complete design for this book. It's pretty interesting to see what city planners are doing with the city you live in, like to get some background information about a planned pedestrian zone with a shopping center in the middle of the city.

Flyer for the 300th birthday of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

10.5x21 cm, open 42x21cm, PDF

Würzburg has many tourist attractions, one of biggest one is the "Residenz" (build by Balthasar Neumann) with the worlds largest ceiling fresco )painted by Tiepolo). A little detail from the fresco is on the cover of the flyer. The Tiepolo year pulled some extra hundreds of thousends tourists into the city, so this flyer had a 200k run. We had to pitch this flyer to the city, and won the job over some other designers, including one of my design professors.

Design study for a jazz festival poster

Ine Ilg from Aalen, Germany won several design contests with her jazz posters. It was a pleasure taking her design class about typography and jazz. This poster is a result from her class. The rhombus is part of the bavarian flag, also the sky-blue background. Munich is the capital of Bavaria, but rather than just using the regular rhombus pattern from the flag, I shifted the rhombus around to illustrate the blue note character of jazz.

Design study for a poster and CD cover

This is another result from the design class I took with Ine Ilg, and it was also my first (and impressive) contact with minimal music which I learned to love during the course. I tried more to illustrate Steve Reich's music on this poster/CD cover design, rather than focusig on typography, which was more "informal" use here.

Poster for "Turkish Week in Würzburg"

80x60 cm

Würzburg had at least one cultural theme week each year. The year before I bought the font called "Raw", based on a Helvetica, printed on a almost not working laser printer, and than digitized into a very complex font. Ernst and I were thinking almost a year when and what for to use this font until Ernst did the design for this poster, and "Raw" seemed to fit pretty good.

Poster for "Spanish Weeks in Würzburg"

60x80 cm

Würzburg had at least one cultural theme week each year. This poster was really fun to do. I really liked to do the pixel sun, I think my first piece I did on a Mac in Photoshop (all design before was done on a black and white Atari DTP system). The low resolution was intended, not by accident. I bought the "Löschblatt" font (an awesome sloppy ink font) a couple of weeks before we did this poster and used it right away. It was a new kind of typography in 1993.

Poster for "Spanish Weeks in Würzburg"

60x80 cm

This poster was my first piece of design I ever did on a Mac (all design before was done on a black and white Atari DTP system). It features some well known "preconception" about Spain, including a famous relief above the entrance of the old university of Salamanca, the spanish partner city of Würzburg. The sloppy ink font called "Löschblatt" continued to be our typographical theme for this event.

Poster for "Wine Festival in Würzburg"

60x80 cm

Every year a girl from the region is elected to become Miss Franconia Wine (fränkische Weinkönigin). And to be really authentic for this poster, we got the actual fingerprints of the reigning Weinkönigin, which happened to be the girl sitting next to me in my physics class back in 1990.
